Happy 21-Month Birthday, Matt!

Today Matt is 21 months old. Believe it or not, it's time for me to make the appointment for his 2-year check-up.

I'll start with a couple of photos from today.

We went for a swim this afternoon. Even after we left the water Matt wanted to keep watching the splashing contest going on. (He often likes watching the big kids.)

Drawing circles and coloring with crayons after dinner, wearing his new soccer jersey

Of course, Matt is still growing! He certainly feels heavier and bigger and taller when we're lifting and carrying him. He has mostly mastered his colors, and he's improving on his numbers through five, even if he still defaults to two. He's still missing the second (as well as third, fourth, etc.) syllables of many words. But he's saying more two word phrases ("all done," "right there") and thinking about putting words together to form his own phrases and sentences ("blue car," "plane... fly," "deer... sleep"). One of his favorite words right now is "another" ("anuh"), as in another book. We're working on getting him to say please, which he's doing regularly now - with a little prompting. Now if we could only figure out what "I see goo-dah" means.

Matt has adjusted well to his new naptime and bedtime routine. We've begun transitioning him from his crib to a big boy bed. Jon took the front rail off of his crib, and eventually we'll move him into a real bed. Matt seems to prefer his new arrangement, perhaps because he gets even more books read to him before he goes to sleep. He also goes down for a nap a little earlier, at noon. Similarly, Matt has just about outgrown his high chair and is more than ready for a booster seat at the table, although he'll miss the reach he now gets in his chair.

Trucks have been our major theme this past month. Diggers and dump trucks remain favorites. But garbage trucks ("gar!") took their turn, and now tow trucks ("tow tow") are his favorite. We'll see what the next week brings... In the meantime we've been pointing out every truck as we drive and taking detours to watch trucks.

Two of Matt's two-year molars have broken through, and the other two may not be far behind. Finally! Once all four are in Matt will be done with his baby teeth. We are all ready for several years'  worth of break from worrying about teeth coming in.
