Happy 15-Month Birthday, Andrew!

This past Wednesday Andy turned 15 months.

Building with blocks at the library

Going down the backyard slide

Andy remains one very busy little guy, often on the move. He prefers to be active, although he will sit to play if something catches his interest. He still loves sand and water. He also has picked up his brother's love of all things vehicle. Like his brother, Andy also tries to draw at the easel and color on paper. Andy also likes stacking things on top of each other, but he really likes throwing things and placing them in places like over the wall keeping him from the pellet stove, in the washing machine, in cabinets and drawers, in bins, and in the trash can.

Andy is bold and adventurous. He is a climber at heart. He is becoming quite skilled at getting up steps, stairs, and ladders in buildings and in play areas. Since what goes up must come down, he does well going back down or sliding down. Just this past week he figured out how to sit to go down a slide, but he still most often goes down feet first and on his belly. Andy is much surer and braver when it comes to scaling heights, unlike his more cautious older brother. In fact, the other week Andy was happily going down the tallest slide which his brother has yet to attempt (although Matt would be fine going down it, too).

Andy is up to around 15 words, at least half of which he uses somewhat regularly, and half a dozen signs or so. He says Mama, Dada, cat, that, ball, roar, meow, hi, bye bye, outside, bird, card, bug, go, cup, water, and bear. And he signs milk, all done, more, up, that one/that way, and dog. His vocabulary is started to increase at a faster rate; he added 3-4 words this week alone. And he is using a wider variety of sounds and inflections. He is very expressive, using words or sounds, pointing, or doing whatever he needs to try to communicate his wants and needs (although he will bite if he's being ignored). He will bring his own snacks or shoes to you when he wants to eat or go outside, for example.

We'll find out in a couple of weeks what Andy's current length and weight is. He is getting closer to 30 pounds, I suspect. Andy is close to outgrowing his 24-month clothes; one more growth spurt and he will be in 2T. He wears 6 wide shoes. Andy's canine teeth are still coming in. I may be happier to be done with that set of teeth than he will, as he is so busy during the day the discomfort doesn't catch up to him until the night.

September 2017 Recap

Just when I got caught up, life caught up to me. After a brief forced hiatus I'm going to wrap up September here with the last of our photos and adventures.

We went to a few outdoor places.

This is the new children's playspace at one of the local Mass Audubon sites. (Matt actually goes to nature school here one morning a week.)

Happy 14-Month Birthday, Andrew!

Monday, September 25th, marked Andy's 14-month birthday.

Andy remains a busy little bulldozer. He is on the go constantly and starting to pick up the pace. If something isn't where we left it, chances are he's the one who moved it or even threw it away. One shoe missing from a pair is becoming a very common theme around here... Andy is tall enough to reach door handles and has no problem pushing doors open and pulling out drawers - then going through everything. And if you hear banging of any sort, Andy is almost always the ringleader. We have to admire Andy's persistence, even if it means we have to remove him from somewhere he's not supposed to be over and over and over.

Andy still likes playing in water and outside as much as possible. Outdoors he enjoys playing with sticks, going for a swing, and climbing up, then sliding down, slides. He still loves the sandbox and fortunately seems to have slowed down at least slightly on his sand consumption. He enjoys playing with vehicles, too, and he likes shaking things that make sounds, whether it's a toy, musical instrument, or box of pasta. He has slowed down on acquiring language, perhaps because he seems to be getting most of what he needs from shouting "uh uh," pointing, or just plan grabbing. He clearly understands a good deal.

We are seeing signs that maybe Andy's canines - the last of his baby teeth before his 2-year molars - are trying to come in. He is drooling, cranky, clingy, and very into brushing his own teeth.

We spent the morning of Andy's 14-month birthday at the playground with some friends. Andy was very busy, although he wasn't too thrilled with the fact that I wasn't feeling well since that limited his ability to run everywhere. But he tried out all of the bouncy rides.

End of September Zoo Visit

The last Sunday of September I took the boys to the zoo while Jon did some work for his graduate course. It was quite a warm day, so we didn't quite get to every animal, but we saw and did quite a bit.

Macaws

Vicunas

Goats in the petting zoo

Pythons

Monitor lizard (I think)

Tortoises

Feeding the parakeets

Sloths

On the train ride we saw elk, turkeys, Canadian geese, ducks, and an egret.

Andy with a stick in a tunnel - in other words, a very happy Andy

Feeding the deer

Giraffes

The white tiger pacing (the orange one was napping around the corner)
